ABOUT FALLING WALLS LAB
Falling Walls Lab is a global pitch competition and networking platform for early-career researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs.
Participants are challenged to present their breakthrough ideas in just 3 minutes, answering one central question: “Which wall will your work break?”
Falling Walls Labs are held worldwide as part of the international Falling Walls initiative and serve as qualifying rounds for the Global Lab Finale in Berlin.
The Falling Walls Lab GIF-ScienceAbroad is an official qualifying Lab within this global network, organized by ScienceAbroad and the German-Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research & Development, primarily for Israeli scientists conducting research abroad.

ScienceAbroad Delegation to Berlin
Following the 2025 Lab, selected participants took part in a coordinated ScienceAbroad-GIF delegation to Berlin.
GERMAN–ISRAELI YOUNG SCIENTISTS EVENING
All delegation participants presented scientific posters at the German–Israeli Young Scientists Evening, a satellite event organized in collaboration with the German Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research & Development (GIF).
The event focused on scientific exchange, panel discussions, and strengthening German–Israeli research collaboration, celebrating 60 years of scientific bilateral relations.
BERLIN SCIENCE WEEK & FALLING WALLS SUMMIT
Many participants also attended sessions, lectures, and networking events during Berlin Science Week and the Falling Walls Science Summit.

This online Lab provides a competitive and inclusive platform for outstanding early-career researchers to present innovative research ideas to an international jury and audience.

Pitch competition
Selected applicants present their ideas in 3-minute live pitches during the online Lab on July 9, 2026
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet one of the following:
- Currently enrolled as a student (Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD)
- Obtained their highest academic degree no more than 10 years ago
- Postdoctoral researcher whose PhD thesis was approved no more than 5 years ago
- Parental leave extension available (contact [email protected])

- Mathematics and Computer Science
- Social Sciences and Humanities
Presentations should be accessible to a broad, scientifically literate audience and avoid field-specific jargon, focusing on the core idea, its significance, and its potential impact.
Global Finale
The winner of the Falling Walls Lab GIF – ScienceAbroad 2026 will receive an officially reserved spot at the Global Falling Walls Lab Finale in Berlin.
At the Global Finale, Lab winners from around the world compete on an international stage during one of the world’s leading science and innovation summits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Falling Walls Lab is a global pitch competition where early-career researchers present breakthrough ideas in 3-minute pitches to an expert jury and international audience. The ScienceAbroad | GIF edition is an official qualifying Lab within the international Falling Walls network.
Eligibility is defined by the Falling Walls Foundation. Applicants must be 18 years or older and meet one of the following:
Currently enrolled as a student (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD),
Highest degree received no more than 10 years ago,
PhD thesis approved no more than 5 years ago (with possible extensions for parental leave under Falling Walls rules).
All Falling Walls Labs, including this one, are conducted in English. All pitches and materials must therefore be in English.
You must clearly present your idea, its impact, and why it is a breakthrough, in 3 minutes exactly. Presentations should be accessible to a broad scientific audience and avoid overly specialized field jargon.

No. There is no participation fee for this Falling Walls Lab.
No. Applicants may submit only one idea and may apply to only one Lab location per season.
After the application deadline, your submission will be reviewed by a jury. Selected applicants will be invited to participate in the online Lab event where they will present their pitch.
Presentations at Falling Walls Labs are evaluated based on:
Breakthrough factor (innovation)
Relevance/Impact
Structure and performance of the pitch.
You should focus on communicating your idea at a conceptual level. Due to the public nature of the Lab event, participants are advised only to share information they are comfortable making public.
The winner earns an officially reserved place at the Global Lab Finale during the Falling Walls Science Summit in Berlin in November 2026 and joins other Lab winners from around the world.

No. Participation in the Falling Walls Lab does not automatically guarantee participation in a delegation to Berlin. Any additional activities or delegations are subject to separate arrangements. The only guaranteed opportunity associated with the Lab is for the winner, who receives an officially reserved spot at the Global Falling Walls Lab Finale in Berlin.
