What you’ll do
The epidemiology manager is part of a new core team that builds from scratch a unique data capability in AstraZeneca Israel that drives to acceleration of real-world evidence for the benefit of patients in Israel and worldwide.
Holding both strategic and scientific role, the epidemiology manager plays a pivotal role in connecting between public health challenges, Israeli real world data opportunities and AstraZeneca’s therapeutic priorities to initiate high quality healthcare research at a global level.
Working in close collaboration with both AstraZeneca’s global therapeutic areas evidence teams, and with stakeholders from the Israeli data ecosystem, the epidemiology manager directs the “glocal” epidemiology strategy and is responsible on the development and implementation of significant epidemiological studies.
The epidemiology manager also ensures all deliverables are performed in the most efficient manner possible, commensurate with budget, quality, accuracy, and timeliness, and in accordance with current advancements in epidemiology methodology.
Other responsibilities will include:
Major activities of the epidemiology manager include planning, designing, executing and reporting of epidemiological studies; critical appraisal and synthesis of relevant epidemiological literature; and development of medical evidence plans to fill critical knowledge gaps.
The epidemiology manager interacts with internal and external customers to ensure appropriate communication of results to stakeholders. The epidemiology manager is responsible on performing research on secondary data through collaboration with external research and academic groups. The epidemiology manager also ensures that timeframes are negotiated appropriately for the completion of tasks, and that the tasks are carried out as agreed and results presented effectively.
The epidemiology manager role requires an increasingly sophisticated understanding of drug discovery and development, clinical research and epidemiological methods, data sources, informatics tools and techniques, disease pathophysiology, risk management, the regulatory environment in the relevant therapeutic area, and factors that influence successful product differentiation and commercialization.
The epidemiology manager is expected to educate colleagues in the principles and practice of epidemiology and participate in the development of complex medical evidence strategies and drive decisions within a complex matrix team environment.

Typical Accountabilities:
The Epidemiology manager is responsible on the design, execution, analysis, interpretation, and internal and external communication of specific epidemiological studies. This role requires taking a leadership role in a range of activities, including delivery of experienced epidemiology strategy, support, and scientific leadership to project teams and close collaboration with the Global therapeutic areas’ epidemiology groups, at all stages of pharmaceutical development.
The Epidemiology manager manages externally commissioned research projects, which includes establishing, maintaining, and expanding relationships to partner effectively with external experts and research groups to negotiate time frames, provide recommendations on resource requirements, and ensure delivery of the tasks as agreed
The Epidemiology manager promotes good epidemiological practice and represents the company’s position when interacting with external experts, collaborative groups, and contract research organizations; and will keep abreast of epidemiological developments within academia, regulatory, and among key opinion leaders.
Essential for the role
MPH or MSc in epidemiology or related health science field, with substantial experience in the healthcare environment
2 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry or in closely related academic epidemiological research
Experience in managing complex epidemiological research plan
Sustained productivity in epidemiological research as manifest by successful design, execution, and publication of original epidemiological research relevant to drug discovery development, commercialization in peer-reviewed journal
Experience in utilizing secondary data and conducting primary data collection studies
Emerging recognition by the external scientific communities as an expert in the application of epidemiology to areas relevant to drug development and commercialization
Able to provide critical appraisal to study designs and published studies
Excellent knowledge in epidemiological methodology and ability to apply it within the pharmaceutical industry at an international level
Sustained record of epidemiological productivity at a strategic as well as an operational level
Able to effectively engage and consult with recognized key external scientific experts, Collaborative Groups and Contract Research Organizations
Good verbal and written communication skills, in Hebrew and in English
Desirable for the role
Ph.D. or equivalent in epidemiology or related health science field.
Good therapeutic and disease knowledge at the following areas: oncology, respiratory, immunology, vaccines, cardiovascular, renal and metabolic
Ability to incorporate novel epidemiological techniques into projects
Excellent understanding of overall business strategy and its link to the various disease areas
Familiarity with relevant regional and international regulatory requirements
Ability to make complex judgments, develop innovative solutions, and apply comprehensive cross-functional and industry understanding to individual projects and programs
Ability to look for more efficient and effective methods/processes of delivering quality studies while conscious of compliance and process rules in the company.
Proven project management skills, including good analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to work effectively with different teams and multiple tasks
Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to details
