Dr. Elli Groner
About the Speaker
Dr. Elli Groner is the Scientific Director of the Dead Sea and Arava Science Center. After completing his BSc and MSc degrees in Environmental Biology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he went on to complete a Ph.D. in ecology at Leeds University, UK.
Dr. Groner lives in the remote town of Mitzpe Ramon in the middle of the Negev desert with his wife and 3 children. He specializes on desert biodiversity and ecosystem services. He compares arid and hyper-arid ecosystems in their structure, function and services. Living at the border between these regions Dr. Groner investigates the food-webs and the integrity of ecosystems and how they are self-organized differently in arid and hyper-arid ecosystems. Dr. Groner specializes on desert arthropods. Dr. Groner’s favorite creatures are darkling beetles (Tenebrionidae). He recently found a new species to science of weevil that was named Brachycerus groneri.
